Glock M&p Shield - Ah, the never-ending debate: "Which pistol dominates the concealed-carrying arena?" A frequent topic of debate, all sides quickly turned to rants about the other's penchant for swallowing.
When comparing the Smith & Wesson M&P9 M2.0 c (the "c" stands for "compact") and the Glock 19, I think preference alone will get you one way or the other.

The two are so similar that it is somewhat useless to compare them, since all that distinguishes them are the details, not strengths or weaknesses. Several factors will change what makes the right gun for you and your situation.

At over 6'2, I can carry a full-sized pistol, but the striking print and extra length of the stock and barrel don't make it very comfortable. Also, I own two pistols discussed in this article and they do everything I ask them to do.
When choosing the right handgun for you, you should strive for a balance between size, caliber, and capacity.
A .22 derringer-style pocket gun may be the most convenient to carry, but not the best tactical choice, and the same can be said for a "Dirty Harry" full-size rifle. . Something in between is ideal, and both the G19 and the M&P9 strike that fine balance.
This is where both the G19 and the M&P9 shine, and why many consider them the best balance of all factors and a popular choice for much of the hidden carry community.

Glock has long been a leader in the field since the introduction of the G19 in 1988. Since that time, it has firmly asserted the "most perfect possible" position for many hidden carriers.
Smith and Wesson released the compact M&P92.0, which matches the size of the G19.
Both share the same all-round power and reliability that is maintained as they are built to work in all conditions. While Glock has more experience on the front lines of conflict and in many law enforcement agencies, M&P is certainly reliable and trustworthy in environments where Glock feels comfortable.
M&P, I also own a G19 because it is a quality pistol that I know I can trust. It's mostly a matter of personal preference and what's more convenient for you to buy and carry.

Since both pistols have the same new price tag ($500-$600), it can be difficult to decide which one to get as the new CCW pistol. Here are my observations to help you make an informed decision:
If you own and shoot other Glocks, I'd recommend sticking with the G19. The grip angle feels right in your hand and you'll have no trouble picking it up and winning your first shots.
If you've grown up with other pistols, the grip angle will probably get used to some. They all need some time to get rid of old habits. An impossible endeavor by all means and we could all use up more time.
I found the M&P to have a more natural grip than the G19's and fill my hand more fully. The latest models of each pistol also include interchangeable rear straps for a custom pistol grip.

M&P regulation is a bit too strong for me. It's nice to hold in hand, but I don't like shaving. I like to carry it with a bra between the weapon and the weapon to prevent it from tripping.
Both pistols have a full 15-round 9mm magazine, but each can also hold a 17-round magazine. The M&P 9 c 2.0 comes with two slideable grip extensions for seamless integration into the 17-round magazine base. G19 does not include these extensions but you can purchase them from aftermarket providers.
Since the grips on both guns are more than enough for my larger-than-average hand, I think these grip extensions are more aesthetically pleasing than anything else.
These details make the original M&P more appealing in my book, but it is important to note that these metal magazines are significantly more expensive than the polymer magazines available for the G19.
The Smith & Wesson M&p Shield Range Session
It's easy to find $10 to $20 magazines for the G19, and I've seen many M&P magazines at local gun stores for more than $50 each.
If desired, you can find magazines for Glock that go well beyond the M&P 17-round limit, with a 33-round and 50-round drum available. Not practical for CCW, but certainly interesting.
While there are aftermarket tape extensions available for M&P, there are several other options for increasing capacity similar to the G19.
The trigger is the next most noticeable difference between the two pistols. I don't like the built-in M&P trigger because it feels clunky and awkward, and prefer the one available on Glocks. The M&P Pro series has a nicer trigger at a higher retail price, but I haven't had a chance to test it yet.

If, like me, you're planning to change triggers, this may not be a big deal for you. I'd recommend holding both pistols in your hand and feel the difference between them and decide which one you prefer or if that's what you're interested in.
Apex Tactical products are my top pick for aftermarket triggers, but that doesn't mean the M&P9 M2.0 c becomes useless without upgrading the trigger. This is a perfectly matched trigger. I just love a smooth, crisp trigger.
While the looks of the G19 are polymer and acceptable for what they are meant to be, they are nothing to write home about. However, I think they are far superior to M&Ps.
The original M&P metal sights are incredibly sharp, and I found them to puncture my shirt, not to mention annoyingly slicing my skin.
The M&p Shield Experiment
If you decide to buy an M&P, you'll want a set of viewfinders from a reputable company like HI VIZ to help with this. Aside from the unreasonably sharp and unwarranted angles, the M&P sights are fine and suitable for precision and aim.
Both of these pistols work well for what you want: saving your life. They are reliable and can function as a combat pistol or a full-size CCW pistol.
Their popularity means that aftermarket upgrades and quality ammo are easy to find, as almost every gunmaker will have a special kit for this type of gun.
Since these pistols are not pocket guns, they are easy to control and the recoil is controllable for most hands.
Smith & Wesson M&p
Both are great tools that deserve your trust and choosing the right tool is paramount. Reviewing this article, it seems that the Glock 19 should be my CCW pistol of choice, as I had a few more problems with the M&P and G19:
If this is all I have to carry, why not go with Glock? After all, for me, M&P is naturally appealing. I seem to be less used to taking shots on the first round.
Try both. Many ranges offer firearm rentals so you can see which is best for you. Which one did you choose? Tell us in the comments below.
